Finding the Right Font
Fonts have always been important to a design, but that’s not what this is about. In the past the idea was a foundry would create a font and like any other thing you would license that font for use. In today’s world its not just the major foundries which are creating beautiful fonts for use in our design pieces. Individual artists have created a world of fonts that is rich and plentiful. Here are my favorite places to get fonts and why.
myfonts.com claims it is the largest collection of fonts on the internet. It keeps collections of fonts from major foundries to individual typographers that you can search through, find and purchase a license for. Not only does MyFonts have a lot of search options but it has a unique feature that allows you to upload a snippet .jpeg image of a font you may have seen somewhere and it will do its best to find you as close a match as it can. There is a huge community of people who use MyFonts and even if their WhatTheFont feature doesn’t work you can easily submit your .jpeg out to the community blog. There usually within a few hours someone in the community will identify the font for you.
This is a place where you can download free fonts for use. These font are submitted to the site by anyone who cares to make one so it can be shared to the whole world for free. While some of the fonts on here are lower in quality you can find a lot of beautiful and truly well done fonts. It has great search options to help you find exactly what you are looking for… and its all FREE.
This is my new favorite place to look for fonts. losttype.com is only a few years old. It was founded by Riley Cran and Tyler Galpin who originally were just trying to distribute one typeface. Today they have added more fonts to the list and have turned into a full fledge foundry that uses fonts from designers from all over the world and distributes them on a pay-what-you-want model. This means you can pay 0$ for the font or choose to donate whatever you feel its worth. The fonts on losttype.com are really very beautiful well crafted I highly recommend you take a look. But be kind and donate they are well worth it.
