Fur and Sandwiches: Does it work?: Quiznos TV ads featuring fur

OK so I’m at a loss. I can’t figure it out. Why would Quiznos go back to using furry things to advertise their sandwiches? Maybe its just me, but when I see these ads for Quiznos, the last thing I do is go “mmmmmm toasty - I gotta go run out and grab a nice furball sandwich.” If you remember, and not fondly, (more like burned into your brain - like accidentally seeing your mom naked), Quiznos launched an ad campaign in 2004 that featured, unexplainably freakish furry, dead-rat looking characters wearing bowler hats and singing horribly that they love Quiznos subs. If you don’t remember them, you can see them below. WARNING: This may cause a gag reflex.

At that time in 2004, critics actually applauded this campaign for it ingenious way that it would cause “water cooler talk” and name recognition. I didn’t care how much recognition it may have gained Quiznos - in my mind the damage done by causing people’s minds to imagine unsanitary food preparation, would be enough to cancel out the good done. I don’t know how the campaign actually fared with the general public instead of “experts,” but I don’t remember that campaign lasting very long.

Fast forward to 2010 and I actually couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the same campaign air on my television set - only this time they used cute kittens. See the new ad below. As if someone in the ad department said “You know… all the experts said that campaign was genius, maybe we just used the wrong characters. Why don’t we use kittens…... yeah…. kittens….everyone loves kittens…..it will be genius all over agai,n but this time even the public will love us!!!”

I love kittens…. I just don’t want them near my food! I don’t know - maybe its just me. I feel like I get a hairball in the back of my throat every time I see it. And the last thing I do is crave food.   love Quiznos sandwiches, but I’d rather look at scrumptious sandwiches and hear mmmm toasty, over and over again before seeing another one of these commercials.  Please Quiznos, stop the torture.
