In honor of Mad Men I created the Blue Billy Cocktail

Last night for the season premier of Mad Men, which my wife and I eagerly awaited, we wanted to celebrate by enjoying a cocktail while watching. So we put our daughter to bed and scurried downstairs. And then it happened.

I realized…it’d been so long since I’ve made cocktails I lacked most mixers. No juice. No fresh fruits. No club soda. No tonic. Nada. And I’m ashamed to admit, my bar has been neglected since our daughter came along. So I started glancing through my mixology books… but kept coming up with recipes that required ingredients I didn’t have.

So finally, panicked, with only two minutes to go I grabbed some old stand by favorite alcohol options, mixed them together, dug some lemon juice out of the catacombs of the fridge (yes, I know, not fresh, but this was an emergency). I mixed them together, gave them a shake, and served. And it turned out to be quite tasty.

I’m sure it already exists, the elixir uses standard bar favorites. But since I couldn’t find it in my books…I’m naming it The Blue Billy Cocktail until I learn otherwise.

The Blue Billy Cocktail

  • 2 ounces Absolut Citron
  • 2 ounces Blue Curacao
  • 1 ounce Cointreau
  • 2 ounces lemon juice

Shaken with ice. Serves 2.

The funny thing, as my wife and I enjoyed my thrown together cocktail and drank in the first episode, as Don and Meghan lounge on the beach, they’re brought a blue drink… it made my wife and I laugh.
