Let’s talk about Pantone’s Fall 2015 Colors
We usually blog about Pantone’s “Color of the Year” when it’s announced – after all, it’s usually a good predictor of color trends in fashion and design. But Pantone also releases Fashion Color Reports each Spring and Fall, as well as tracking color trends on an ongoing basis.
Color influences more than fashion
From interior design to industrial design to graphic design, color plays a huge role. And the colors that were “in fashion” one year can look dated after a few years or decades. Those who are old enough to remember the 70s will remember that “harvest gold” and “avocado green” were extremely popular colors for everything from appliances to fashion – and they made their way into plenty of logos and ads at the time as well. Of course, those colors look very dated 40 years later.
Pay attention to color trends, but don’t buy into every trend
I adore the Pantone Fall 2015 color palette. It’s a nice balance of earthy neutrals and bolder hues. These neutrals are anything but dull, but they’re poised to complement a whole range of other colors.
But no matter how much you may love a color, it’s always a good idea to view it in terms of context. Very few colors will withstand 20-30 years without appearing dated: Again, the golds and greens of the 70s are a good example, as are the neons of the 80s.
It’s important to choose colors based on context. If you’re choosing a logo color, it needs to stand the test of time – at least 10 years. Fashion is obviously more changeable, and colors will go in and out of style quickly. And while there are many interesting colors for appliances these days, you’ll want to make sure it’s a color you can live with for 10-15 years, at least.
Color is important, and color trends come and go. Make sure your color choices will withstand the life span of whatever those colors adorn.
